MIYAGI Cherry blossom petals

MIYAGI Michio Cherry blossom petals

By the time we visited Sumadera Temple
many of the blooming cherry trees
had already shed their petals.
I scooped up hand-fulls of the petals,
and stacking them just so,
strung them with needle and thread to
make a hanging chain.
To this day I can remember
how wonderfully soft their pale pink
petals felt to the touch.
Then, too, someone had bought there
as a souvenir for me
some salt-preserved cherry blossoms
in a little clay pot.
Even now I will never forget
the taste and fragrance
of one of those blossoms
hot water poured over it,
steeping in my cup,
that I imbibed after we got home.
