Medieval Japanese Studies Institute

We are a center for the study of women, Buddhism, and cultural history. Our activities are focused on imperial convents and their heritage. In addition to researching their history and treasures, we assist in finding ways to conserve and preserve precious artifacts and documents.

中世日本研究所のロゴは、京都における研究所設立の動因となった十三世紀の尼五山筆頭 景愛寺開山である無外如大禅尼の花押をシンボル・マークとしています。

The logo of the Medieval Japanese Studies Institute is a cypher signature of Mugai Nyodai (ac.13th century), one of the best-known Zen Buddhist nuns in the history of Japan and the inspiration for the founding of our institute.
